5 Exciting & Terrifying Things About A.I

 Nr.5  Automation

One massive advantage of artificial intelligence is its potential to complete mundane tasks through automation that will increase productivity.  Theoretically this can even remove “boring” tasks from humans and free them to pursue more creative and rewarding tasks. Other benefits from A.I automation include faster decision making and avoiding errors. Nearly 1.3 million people die in road crashes each year, on average that's 3,287 deaths a day. In the near future, Self-driving cars, might bring down this horrible statistics closer to zero. And Being fearful when going to the hospital for surgery, might become a thing of the past. A surgical robot, doesn't need food, doesn't get stresses out and it doesn't even need a break. It can be operational 24/7.   Another benefit that comes from A.I automation is it's ability to take risks on behalf of humans.  Take for example, space exploration. As we already witnessed with the Curiosity rover on mars.

Nr. 4 Job Losses

We talked about the benefits that come with A.I Automation. But the opposite side of that coin is a massive loss of jobs. There is little doubt that artificial intelligence will displace many low-skilled jobs. The concept of driverless cars might displace the need to have millions of human drivers. Truckers are already suffering the consequences of A.I Automation. But people with High skilled jobs will also be affected. Such as doctors, pilots, software engineers etc. Some people argue that artificial intelligence will create more wealth than it destroys. As happened with the industrial revolution. Where a majority of farmers lost their job and got replaced with farm equipment but as a consequence, industries increased global wealth. But this is nothing like the Industrial revolution. Because whatever new jobs are created by A.I automation, human labor will simply not be able to compete with the efficiency of A.I

Nr. 3 A.I Arms Race

On October 27, 1962, at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the American destroyer USS Beale began dropping depth charges on the nuclear-armed Soviet submarine B-59, which was lurking near the U.S. blockade line around Cuba. The Cold war sparked a nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. In the 1980s the number of Nuclear devices peaked at 70,000. But Civilization survived the Nuclear Arms Race. Today, only narrow or weak A.I exist. But with the increasing development of information technology we could wake up one day and find ourselves in the presence of General A.I.  Computers process information about a million times faster than the human brain. Calculators, chess enginees, etc are already super-human in their tasks. But they are still narrow. Imagine what a General artifical intelligence would be capable of.  An A.I arms race between the United States and Russica or the U.S and China is a much more severe threat to civilization than the nuclear arms race ever was. Because whoever achieves general A.I first, essentially, wins the world.

Nr. 2 The End of The World As We Know It

When asked about the dangers  of A.I, Bill Gates  said: "I don't understand why some people are not concerned" It is probably our biggest existential threat. In terms of speed of information proccessing, a computer is a about a million times faster than a human brain. And a general A.I would be able to process all of human knowledge in a very short time. Even if it is just as smart as a human, because of it's incredible speed of proccessing information, it would be able to produce 20,000 years of human intellectual work in a few weeks.  No smart person who is reasonably concerned about A.I believes that machines  will become malevolent over night and end human life. The fear is rather of misaligned interests. Known as the aligment problem. Many smart people, including: Stephen Hawking, and Elon Musk etc, urged for the need to solve the alignment problem well before we develop a superintelligent A.I.  And expressed concern that full artificial intelligence could result in human extinction.

Nr. 1 Technological Singularity

Four polls, conducted in 2012 and 2013, suggested that the median estimate was a 50% chance that artificial general intelligence or A.G.I would be developed by  2040 to 2050. As computers increase in power, it becomes possible for people to build a machine that is more intelligent than humanity. This superhuman intelligence possesses greater problem-solving and inventive skills than current humans are capable of. This superintelligent machine then designs an even more capable machine, or re-writes its own software to become even more intelligent. This might bring about an intelligence explosion.  A technological singularity, will trigger massive technological growth resulting in unfathomable changes to human civilization.  This super ingelligence would be able to solve problems like disease, poverty, aging, etc in no time.  John von Neumann and Ray Kurzweil argue that it is difficult or impossible for present-day humans to predict what human beings' lives would be like in a post-singularity world.
